IAS is India’s most prestigious government service. IAS are selected through Civil Services Exams conducted by UPSC every year.
What is IAS?
In India, Civil Services are divided into three groups All India Services, Group A services, and Group B services. Indian Administrative Service aka IAS is one of three all India Services (others IPS and IFoS). UPSC IAS exam is open for any eligible Indian.
Since independence (and even before that) governance in India is led by civil servants in general and IAS in particular. They are leading everywhere as SDOs, ADMs, DMs, Secretaries, CEOs/Directors of PSUs, Chairman of Boards, etc.
Three Phases of UPSC Civil Services Exams
Preliminary test is first tier of UPSC civil services exam popularly known as IAS Exam. There are two papers in PT, General Studies Paper I contains questions form comprehension and aptitude while GS Paper II contains questions from Social Studies, Current Affairs, Culture etc.
Mains written exam is second leg of this selection process.
